2025 Technology Report Contest

Technology Accreditation Canada – 2025 Technology Report Contest Press Release

On September 26, 2025, Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) announced the 2025 Technology Report Contest prize winners. Awarded the top prize of $1,000 are Aafreen Kaur, Kellen Brenchley, Joonhyun An, and Darren Nesian graduates of the Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering Technology program at Centennial College with their “Design of a Variable Pitch Ram Air Turbine” report. Donald Wang, Chair, quoted, “Centennial’s ASENT3 - SETAS was thrilled to learn that students from this program won First Place in this contest. This report showcased exceptional innovation and technical depth. These students undertook a challenging capstone project that demonstrated their multidisciplinary expertise in mechanical and aerodynamic design, Finite Element Analysis, control systems architecture, and iterative prototyping. Their project was also a recipient of a prestigious Dean’s Award. The TAC judges noted, “This report presents an innovative and well-executed project involving the design, development, and testing of a variable pitch ram air turbine system capable of maintaining constant RPM and stable voltage output across varying airspeeds. The work is clearly structured, with distinct design phases supported by computer-aided design, control circuit simulation, prototype development, and wind tunnel testing. The study demonstrates originality and practical applications, particularly in providing emergency electrical or hydraulic power for aircraft. The report includes thorough analysis, calculations, programming code, a GANTT chart, and strong use of references and citations. The prototype testing effectively confirmed the potential for automated control without pilot intervention, and the discussion of limitations, challenges, and recommendations adds further value. This is a high-quality, technically sound, and innovative project.”

Chris Sadek, Faculty, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, noted, “SAIT’s MacPhail School of Energy is proud to recognize Maisa Danaf and Gaby Yung from the Chemical Laboratory Technology program for their outstanding capstone project on “Biosorption of Selenium in Contaminated Water”. Their work demonstrates how student-led innovation in our program can contribute to sustainable solutions for water treatment and environmental protection which won Second Place prize of $500 in the contest. The judges noted, “this report examines the harmful impact of selenium from historical coal mining on fish populations and explores the use of food waste as sustainable, cost-effective biosorbents to reduce contamination in water. The study provides a clear and accessible overview of the testing process, results, limitations, and future directions, while addressing both technical and non-technical audiences.

With their report titled, “Comparative Analysis of Isolated Microplastics in Select Food Samples” report in the Biotechnology Advanced program at Centennial College was the Third Place Winner and students Elyssa Jane Gargallano and Andrea Collado for the $250 prize. The judges cited, “A well-researched and logically structured report that effectively applies advanced techniques to study microplastics in food. Preliminary findings highlight potential impacts on gut health and broader human and environmental health. The methodology is clear, conclusions are sound, and recommendations are well supported.”

The contest, open to TAC accredited programs, saw twenty-five submissions. A panel of TAC certified auditors from select engineering technology and applied science disciplines form the technical review panels to conduct an initial rating of the reports. The top two reports scored over 80% from the reviewers in each discipline group advance to the contest judging. Four certified professionals, each with extensive education, industry, and audit backgrounds served as contest judges. Reports were judged against the criteria in the National Technology Report Guideline.

“On behalf of TAC and our Board, I extend warm congratulations to the winners of the 2025 Technology Report Contest,” stated Derek Tsang, TAC Chair. “This year’s winners reflected originality, innovation in the design, development, and testing of advanced technology projects. The reports were technically rigorous, well-structured, and supported by detailed analysis, calculations, and prototype testing. Importantly, they highlighted both practical applications and thoughtful recommendations. We commend the students for their outstanding work, and we thank faculty mentors and project sponsors for their valuable guidance and support.”
